What is sedation dentistry?
Dr. Natalie B. McCarthy and her team understand that some patients feel anxious and nervous about their visits to the dentist. We strive to help each patient have an enjoyable, relaxing experience at our office. As part of this goal, we are pleased to provide sedation dentistry at our dental practice. Sedation dentistry involves using sedatives to help you feel calmer during your dental visit.
What is nitrous oxide?
Nitrous oxide is the main form of sedation dentistry we offer. Also called laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a gas that produces a relaxed, euphoric feeling. You will inhale the nitrous oxide, which is mixed with a high percentage of oxygen, through a nose mask during your dental treatment. You will remain awake and able to respond to any questions or instructions from our dentist, but you will feel more comfortable and at ease. Nitrous oxide is very safe, and the effects will wear off within just a few minutes after we end the flow of the gas.
What is oral sedation?
In addition to nitrous oxide, we also provide oral sedation at our practice. Oral sedation involves taking a tablet by mouth one hour before your appointment. We will need to get clearance from your medical history before prescribing oral sedation, and we will make certain that you are safe and comfortable throughout your treatment. You will also need a friend or family member to drive you to and from your appointment to ensure your safety so please plan accordingly.
